Thornton, Matthew

Thornton, Matthew (1714-1803), was a New Hampshire signer of the Declaration of Independence. He served as president of the first New Hampshire Provincial Congress in 1775 and as speaker of the general assembly in 1776. In 1776 and 1778, he was a delegate to the Continental Congress. Thornton was born in Ireland, and came to America about 1718. He practiced medicine in Londonderry, New Hampshire. Thornton died on June 24, 1803.
