Tiffany, << TIHF uh nee, >> Charles Lewis (1812-1902), was an American dealer in precious stones. His reputation as a jeweler became so great that his name now stands for the highest quality in jewelry.
Tiffany was born on Feb. 15, 1812, in Killingly, Connecticut. He went to New York City in 1837 and opened a small notions store. Tiffany soon was specializing in jewelry, glassware, and china. Later he imported European crown jewels. He also set up factories to make some of the products he sold. He died on Feb. 18, 1902. Louis Comfort Tiffany, his son, created the famous Tiffany stained glass (see Tiffany, Louis Comfort ).
