Toadfish is the name of a group of large-headed fish that live on the bottom of tropical and temperate seas. There are about 65 species of toadfish. Most measure less than 11/2 feet (46 centimeters) long. Some species, such as the midshipmen, can produce light called bioluminescence (see Bioluminescence). Most toadfish make grunting or toadlike noises.
Female toadfish commonly make nests for their eggs. The males guard the nest and can be extremely aggressive if the eggs are threatened. Certain species of toadfish are popular aquarium pets.
