Tom Thumb was the name of the first American-built steam locomotive. Peter Cooper, a New York manufacturer, designed and built it in 1830. It operated on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad between Baltimore and Ellicott’s Mills (now Ellicott City), Maryland, in the summer of 1830. It pulled one of the first passenger trains.
