Toronto, << tuh RON toh, >> University of, is one of Canada’s largest universities. It is coeducational and supported chiefly by the province of Ontario. The main campus is in downtown Toronto. The university also operates two colleges of arts and science, one in the town of Mississauga and the other in the community of Scarborough, in northeastern Toronto. The university was founded in 1827 as King’s College. It received its present name in 1850. The university operates many libraries. It also administers an astronomical observatory, numerous research centers, and the University of Toronto Press.

The University of Toronto awards arts and science degrees for three other universities—the University of St. Michael’s College, the University of Trinity College, and Victoria University. It also grants degrees for the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Three theological colleges—Emmanuel, Knox, and Wycliffe—are associated with the university but grant their own degrees. All seven associated institutions are in Toronto.
