Towhee, << TOH hee or TOW hee, >> is any of several small North American finches. The eastern towhee, a well-known species (kind), lives in the eastern half of the United States and southern Canada. This bird is about 8 inches (20 centimeters) long. Its sides are a chestnut color. Its belly is white. The head and back are black in males and brown in females. Eastern towhees that live in western North America have white bars on their wings and white spots on their back.
The eastern towhee makes its home in open woods and bushy fields. It usually builds its nest on the ground, using dead leaves and twigs. There, the female lays two to six whitish eggs with brown speckles. The birds scratch among leaves and grass, searching for insects, spiders, earthworms, berries, and seeds.
