Town is a community of closely clustered dwellings and other buildings in which people live and work. It may be large or small. Most people in the United States and Canada use the word town to refer to a municipal unit that is larger than a village and smaller than a city. In New England, the town is the principal unit of local government, combining the roles of both city and county. This unit consists of one or more settlements and the surrounding rural area.
