Trudeau, << troo DOH, >> Garry (1948-…), is an American cartoonist best known for his comic strip “Doonesbury.” The comic strip has gained fame and stirred controversy with its strong political and social satire. Trudeau draws “Doonesbury” with simple lines to encourage readers to focus more on the strip’s message than on its artwork. Trudeau won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize in the cartoon category, the first artist ever to receive the prize for drawing a comic strip.
Trudeau was born on July 21, 1948, in New York City. His full name is Garretson Beekman Trudeau. While a student at Yale University in 1968, he created a comic strip called “Bull Tales” for the Yale Daily News. The strip was first syndicated to newspapers in 1970 and the title changed to “Doonesbury,” after a character in the strip named Michael J. Doonesbury. Trudeau has also written television scripts and magazine articles. Many collections of “Doonesbury” comic strips have appeared in book form.
