Trumbull, Jonathan (1710-1785), was governor of Connecticut in the Revolutionary period. He was the only prewar colonial governor who supported the patriots. Trumbull supplied the Continental Army with food, clothing, and munitions. This task kept him in close touch with General George Washington (see Brother Jonathan ).
Trumbull was born on Oct. 12, 1710, in Lebanon, Connecticut. He built up a business with Britain, which failed just before war began. The experience helped him later in supplying the patriots. He served in the legislature and as deputy governor before holding office as governor from 1769 to 1784. He died on Aug. 17, 1785. In 1872, his statue was placed in the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
