Tuesday is the name of the third day of the week. Its name comes from Tiu, or Tiw, the old Anglo-Saxon form of Tyr, name of the Norse god of war. Tyr was the son of Odin, or Woden, for whom Wednesday was named. The French call Tuesday Mardi, for Mars, the Roman war god. Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent, was so-called because it was customary to confess and be shriven or shrove (receive absolution) by a priest. See also Shrove Tuesday; Week.
