Tulane University is a private university in New Orleans, Louisiana. It offers programs for study abroad and has special programs in international and comparative law, Latin American studies, and political economy. Tulane was founded in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana. In 1884, it was renamed in honor of Paul Tulane, a New Orleans merchant who gave the university its first endowment. In August 2005, Tulane University was closed after Hurricane Katrina. The university reopened in January 2006 and reorganized its academic divisions. Its athletic teams are nicknamed the Green Wave.
