United Nations University (UNU) is a worldwide research and advanced training institution established by the United Nations (UN). United Nations University is a central planning agency for networks of cooperating institutions and scholars.
UNU promotes joint study and the exchange of knowledge to solve global problems. The university organizes and coordinates research, training, and information services worldwide. It concentrates its studies in five areas: peace, security, and human rights; good governance; population and health; global change and development; and science, technology, and society.
The UN General Assembly chartered the United Nations University in 1973, and it began operations in 1975. UNU originally did not grant any degrees. However, the university’s charter was changed in 2009 to allow it to grant advanced degrees. The university has headquarters in Tokyo.
