Upper Hutt (pop. 43,980) is a city in the southern part of the North Island of New Zealand, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Wellington. It is one of the country’s fastest-growing industrial and residential areas. It stands on the eastern bank of the Hutt River, near the northern end of the Hutt Valley, an important industrial area.
In 1848, James Brown established an inn on the site that is now the business center. In the 1850’s, after James Cruickshank built a timber mill, the settlement grew rapidly. Upper Hutt became a city in 1966.
