Van Den Bosch, Johannes (1780-1844), was governor general of the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia) from 1830 to 1834. He is known for introducing the cultivation system to Java. Under this system, the Dutch forced the Javanese to grow certain crops. This practice saved the Netherlands from financial ruin but was disastrous for the Javanese.
Van Den Bosch was born in Gelderland in the Netherlands. He became a lieutenant in the army when he was 17. In 1798, he was given an appointment in Batavia (now Jakarta). In 1810, Van Den Bosch sailed for the Netherlands. He was captured by a British ship and taken to the United Kingdom. He was released in 1813. Van Den Bosch was appointed governor general of the Netherlands East Indies in January 1830. On his return to the Netherlands in 1834, he was made minister for the colonies. He held this post until 1839.
