Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, is used by the United States military to test missiles and launch satellites into space. The base covers about 98,400 acres (39,800 hectares) northwest of Los Angeles. It was established in 1957 on an Army training post and named after General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the second chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force.
