Vanderbilt University is a coeducational, privately controlled research university in Nashville. The school was endowed in 1873, after the American businessman Cornelius Vanderbilt gave $1 million to build and support it. Vanderbilt offers many educational opportunities, including extracurricular research projects, community service, and overseas study programs. The university’s athletic teams are called the Commodores.
