Vicksburg, Mississippi (pop. 21,573), is a Mississippi River port. It is on the west border of the state. Its chief products include chemicals, fabricated metals, and wood products. The French and then the Spaniards established outposts in the area in the 1700’s. The town was incorporated in 1825. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Vicksburg fell to the Union Army on July 4, 1863, after a 47-day siege (see Civil War, American (The Vicksburg campaign) ). Vicksburg National Military Park is in the city. Vicksburg is the seat of Warren County and has a mayor-council form of government.
