Wagner, Robert Ferdinand

Wagner, << WAG nuhr, >> Robert Ferdinand (1877-1953), was an American statesman. He served in the New York legislature and showed special interest in welfare questions.

Wagner was justice of the Supreme Court of New York from 1919 to 1926. From 1927 to 1949, Wagner represented New York in the United States Senate. A Democrat, he sponsored the National Industrial Recovery Act; the National Labor Relations Act, or “Wagner Act;” the Social Security Act; and the Housing Act of 1937. Wagner was born on June 8, 1877, in Nastatten, near Wiesbaden, Germany. He died on Dec. 6, 1953. His son, Robert F. Wagner, Jr., served as mayor of New York City from 1954 to 1965.
