Walker, John

Walker, John (1952-…), a New Zealand track and field athlete, was one of the dominant middle-distance runners of the 1970’s and 1980’s. Walker set a world record in 1975 when he ran a mile in 3 minutes 49.4 seconds. He won the 1,500 meters race at the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976. Walker was the first man to run 100 one-mile races in less than four minutes each. During his career, he set national records in races from 1,000 meters to 3,000 meters. John George Walker was born in Papakura, New Zealand, on Jan. 12, 1952.
