Welsh terrier is one of the oldest English breeds of dogs. It has been known in Wales for several hundred years. It is closely related to the original black and tan terrier of England. The Welsh looks like a small-sized Airedale, with its wiry coat of deep red and jet-black markings. It has a long head and powerful jaws. This hearty hunting terrier weighs about 20 pounds (9 kilograms). The Welsh terrier originally was bred for use in fox hunting.
