Weser, << VAY zuhr, >> River is an important German waterway. Its main headwater, the Werra, rises on the southwestern slopes of the Thuringian Forest in central Germany. The Weser winds 430 miles (700 kilometers) to its mouth at the North Sea near Bremerhaven. In 1894, its channel was deepened from the mouth to Bremen, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) to the south, so that large ships could sail to Bremen.
