Westergaard, Harald Malcolm (1888-1950), a distinguished American civil engineer and mathematician, became noted for his applications of mathematical analysis in the solution of engineering problems. He developed methods for the design of dams and of pavements for roads, bridges, and airports. Westergaard was born on Oct. 9, 1888, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and came to the United States in 1914. He became a U.S. citizen in 1920. He died on June 22, 1950.
