Western Church was the Christian church in the West Roman Empire during the Middle Ages , from about the A.D. 1100’s through the 1400’s. Eventually, it became the Roman Catholic Church . The Christian church in the East Roman Empire became the Eastern Orthodox Churches . The Western and Eastern churches formally split from each other in 1054, an event sometimes referred to as the Great Schism. The term Great Schism also describes a later period when more than one man claimed to be pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
