Wheatley, Dennis

Wheatley, Dennis (1897-1977), was a British author known for his best-selling thrillers, many with detailed historical settings. Wheatley’s books are noted for their meticulous research and their highly varied historical and geographical backgrounds. Wheatley wrote several series of thrillers featuring the central characters Roger Brook, Julian Day, Molly Fountain, and the Duke de Richleau. The series featuring master spy Roger Brook took place during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars of the late 1700’s and early 1800’s.

Several of Wheatley’s novels deal with black magic and the occult. They include The Devil Rides Out (1935), To the Devil a Daughter (1953), and The Satanist (1960). His The Devil and All His Works (1971) is a textbook on black magic and Satanism. Wheatley also edited numerous anthologies, including A Century of Horror Stories (1935) and Dennis Wheatley’s Second Book of Horror Stories (1968).

Dennis Yates Wheatley was born on Jan. 8, 1897, in London. He died on Nov. 11, 1977. The Time Has Come, a three-volume autobiography, was published from 1978 to 1980, after his death.
