White, Alfred Holmes (1873-1953), pioneered in the development of engineering as a profession in the United States. He spent most of his career at the University of Michigan, where he organized one of the first chemical engineering programs in the United States. White also wrote several early textbooks for the field. His work with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and other organizations helped set formal standards for American engineering education. White was born on April 29, 1873, in Peoria, Illinois. He died on Aug. 25, 1953.
