Wigwam is the name for a kind of dwelling used by the Algonquian-speaking peoples of the Eastern Woodlands. In the East, the foundation was usually made of light poles tied together with bark, forming an oval-shaped dome. The dwelling was covered with layers of bark or reed mats, laid on like shingles. Other wigwams had a rectangular frame and gabled roof. Some northern Algonquian groups used a cone-shaped tent.
