Windhoek, << VIHNT hook >> (pop. 160,000), is the capital and largest city of Namibia. It lies on a dry plateau near the center of the country. Windhoek serves as the commercial and administrative center of Namibia. A small technical college is in the city.
German soldiers established Windhoek in the late 1880’s, when Germany occupied the surrounding area. South Africa conquered Namibia during World War I (1914-1918). After 1918, South Africa continued to control it, despite international protest, until 1990, when Namibia gained its independence.
