WWF, formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund or the World Wide Fund for Nature, is one of the world’s largest conservation organizations. Since it was founded in 1961, the organization has worked in over 100 countries to protect hundreds of plant and animal species and their habitats. The organization officially changed its name to WWF in 2001.
WWF campaigns to save such animals as the rhinoceros, tiger, elephant, and giant panda. The organization works to prevent the illegal use and trade of endangered species and their parts. These parts include tiger bone and rhinoceros horn.
WWF has preserved vast areas of land and helped reduce exhaustion and pollution of natural resources. It campaigns about such issues as loss of fisheries, destruction of forests, and global warming.
The organization has more than 1 million members in the United States and about 5 million members worldwide. Its global headquarters are near Geneva, Switzerland.
