Wright, Billy (1924-1994), a British football ( soccer ) player, captained the Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and England soccer teams. FC stands for football club. He played in 105 international matches for England, 90 of them as captain. Wright first captained England at the age of 24.
William Ambrose Wright was born on Feb. 6, 1924, in Ironbridge, Shropshire . He joined Wolverhampton FC straight from school in 1938 and spent his entire playing career with that team. He won one cup-winner’s medal, in 1949, and three league-championship medals. Wright began his playing career as a forward. However, he always played as a halfback after his first international appearance, which was against Belgium in 1946. Wright managed Arsenal FC from 1962 to 1966. He was Head of Sport and Outside Broadcasts for the ATV Network from 1966 to 1981. Wright died on Sept. 3, 1994.
