York

York was one of England’s largest provincial cities from the Middle Ages until the Industrial Revolution of the 1700’s and early 1800’s. It stands at the junction of the rivers Ouse and Foss. York is the center of the unitary authority (local government area) of York, which has a population of 202,821.

Romans founded York and called it Eboracum. York Minster Cathedral is one of the finest English churches. It was badly damaged by fire in 1984. Repairs of the damage were completed in 1988. The archbishop of York is second in authority to the archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England. York’s historic sites attract many tourists. The city is famous for its museums, which include the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre.
