Young, Geoffrey Winthrop (1876-1958), an Englishman, was one of the greatest mountaineers in the history of the sport. Young compiled an impressive record of mountain climbing in the Alps during the 20 years before the outbreak of World War I in 1914. During that war, he lost a leg at the Battle of Monte San Gabriele. Young fitted himself with an artificial limb and continued his mountaineering after war ended in 1918. Young wrote several books that are considered classics in the literature of mountaineering, notably Mountain Craft, which went through many editions after it was first published in 1920. His Collected Poems was published in 1936. He also wrote two autobiographies, On High Hills (1927) and Mountains of a Difference (1952). Young was born on Oct. 25, 1876, in London. He died on Sept. 6, 1958.
