Younger of Leckie, Lord

Younger of Leckie, Lord (1931-2003), was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was secretary of state for defense from 1986 to 1989. He had served as secretary of state for Scotland from 1979 to 1986.

Younger served in the House of Commons from 1964 to 1992. He was the Scottish Conservative Party whip (leader in charge of organizing party members) from 1965 to 1967. In Edward Heath’s administration (1970-1974), he held posts in the Scottish Development Office and the Ministry of Defence. In 1974 and 1975, Younger served as the chairman of the Conservative Party in Scotland.

Younger left the Commons in 1992 to concentrate on his business career. That same year, he became a life peer with the title Baron Younger of Prestwick. His father, the third Viscount Younger of Leckie, died in 1997. Lord Younger then inherited the family title. In 1998, he took a seat in the House of Lords. From 1991 to 2001, he served as chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.

George Kenneth Hotson Younger was born on Sept. 22, 1931, in Stirling, Scotland. He was educated at Edinburgh, Winchester College, and Oxford University. He served in the armed forces in Germany and Korea in 1950 and 1951. Younger later became a director of his family’s brewing firm. He died on Jan. 26, 2003.
