Zoffany, Johann (1733-1810), a German-born English artist, painted many fine portraits and theatrical pictures, particularly of actor David Garrick. He also painted small domestic group portraits called conversation pieces that rank among his most praised works. In addition, Zoffany painted many works for the royal family during the reign of King George III and Queen Charlotte. These paintings include The Academicians of the Royal Academy (1772) and The Tribuna of the Uffizi (1772-1778).
Zoffany was born on March 13, 1733, in Ratisbon, Germany. He settled in England about 1758. In 1768, he became a founder member of the Royal Academy. He also painted in India from 1783 to 1789. Zoffany died on Nov. 11, 1810.
