Greaves, Captain

Greaves, Captain, also called Red Legs, was a Scotch-Irish pirate in the 1670’s. He became a pirate when he accidentally climbed aboard a pirate ship to escape a cruel master. He killed the pirate captain in a duel, and was elected captain. He was a successful pirate, but he never robbed the poor or mistreated prisoners. He retired after capturing an island off the Venezuelan coast. He was imprisoned for piracy in 1680, but an earthquake destroyed the prison. He won a pardon, and was loved and respected when he died.
