Goliath grouper, formerly known as the jewfish, is a large fish found in parts of the Atlantic and eastern Pacific oceans. It ranks as one of the largest types of fish called groupers. Adults grow up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) long and may weigh as much as 680 pounds (310 kilograms).
Goliath groupers gather in huge colonies to spawn (reproduce). They were once a popular food fish. However, overfishing has drastically reduced their populations. Several governments, including that of the United States, have banned fishing of this grouper within their territories.
