Marietta (pop. 13,385), the oldest town in Ohio, is a major manufacturing and trading center. The city lies on the north bank of the Ohio River at the mouth of the Muskingum River.
Marietta serves as a market for farm products of the Muskingum Valley. The chief manufactures include medical equipment, paints, gasoline, lubricating oils, concrete products, alloys, phenol, and polystyrene. The city is the home of Marietta College.
Pioneers led by General Rufus Putnam founded Marietta in 1788. The city was named for Queen Marie Antoinette of France. It has a mayor-council government and is the seat of Washington County.
