Ossietzky, Carl von

Ossietzky, << `aw` see EHTS kee, >> Carl von (1889-1938), a German journalist, won the 1935 Nobel Peace Prize for promoting world disarmament. Ossietzky fought for Germany in World War I (1914-1918) but later denounced Nazi military build-ups in his weekly publication. He was imprisoned as a traitor in 1933. He contracted tuberculosis in prison and was in a sanitarium when the Nobel award was announced. This announcement enraged Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, who then forbade German citizens to accept any future Nobel Prize. Ossietzky was born in Hamburg, Germany.
