Prayer book is a collection of prayers in printed form for use in private devotions or public services. A well-known prayer book is the Book of Common Prayer used by the Church of England. It contains church doctrine (teachings and beliefs) and forms for religious ceremonies, as well as prayers. It first appeared in 1549. The Episcopal Church in the United States uses the book in a special revised form. Prayers and devotions of the Roman Catholic Church are contained in books called the breviary, the missal, and the sacramentary.
