Redgrave, Michael (1908-1985), was an English actor who became known for his roles in the plays of William Shakespeare. Redgrave made more than 50 motion pictures and played a wide variety of roles ranging from comic to tragic. He was also a noted stage director.
Redgrave made his stage debut in 1934 in Counsellor-at-Law. He began his movie career in 1938 in The Lady Vanishes, a famous suspense film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Redgrave’s other movies include The Stars Look Down (1939), Dead of Night (1945), Fame Is the Spur (1947), The Browning Version (1951), The Importance of Being Earnest (1951), and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1963).
Michael Scudamore Redgrave was born March 20, 1908, in Bristol and graduated from Cambridge University. He was knighted in 1959. He was married to Rachel Kempson, a famous stage actress. Their daughters, Vanessa and Lynn, became noted stage and film actresses. Vanessa Redgrave’s daughters, Natasha Richardson and Joely Richardson, also became successful actresses. Michael Redgrave died on March 21, 1985.
