Rowan, << ROH uhn, >> Andrew Summers (1857-1943), a U.S. Army lieutenant, brought information about the military situation in Cuba to the U.S. government from the Cuban rebel General Calixto Garcia Iniguez in 1898. Elbert Hubbard’s “A Message to Garcia” vividly but incorrectly described his adventure. Rowan disguised himself as an English sportsman and used the Spanish he had learned during service in Chile. He received the Distinguished Service Cross. Rowan was born in Gap Mills, West Virginia, on April 23, 1857. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1881. Rowan died on Jan. 10, 1943.
