Sandakan

Sandakan (pop. 157,330) is one of the largest cities in Sabah, a state of Malaysia. It is on the island of Borneo, near the Sulu Sea, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) east of Kota Kinabalu. Ships link Sandakan with Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Peninsular Malaysia. Rubber plantations and lumber camps spread inland from the city. Sawmills and fisheries form Sandakan’s main industries.
