Teletypewriter was an electromechanical typewriter that transmitted impulses over a wire to a receiver that printed the message. As the typist struck each key on the transmitter, it activated a combination of electrical impulses that made a similar letter arm react at the receiving end. Teletypewriter machines were often connected in series, and many receivers in different parts of the world could be run from one transmitter at the same time.
News wire services pioneered the use of the teletypewriter in the early 1950’s. Today, teletypewriters have been replaced by computerized satellite transmissions that relay the news directly to newsroom computers.
