Weller, Thomas Huckle

Weller, Thomas Huckle (1915-2008), a research biologist, shared the 1954 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with John F. Enders and Frederick C. Robbins (see Enders, John F.). The men grew poliomyelitis viruses on tissues of human embryos outside the body (see Poliomyelitis). Weller also isolated and grew chickenpox, mumps, and shingles viruses.

Weller was born on June 15, 1915, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He served as professor of tropical public health at Harvard University from 1949 until his retirement in 1985. Weller died on Aug. 23, 2008.
