Wheeler, Earle Gilmore

Wheeler, Earle Gilmore (1908-1975), a general in the United States Army, was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1964 to 1970. He served as chief of staff for the U.S. Army from 1962 until his appointment as chairman by President Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War. Wheeler was with the 63rd Division during campaigns in Europe in World War II (1939-1945). He also held high staff positions in Europe with United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces after the war. Wheeler was born in Washington, D.C., and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy.
