Intranet is a private computer network that mimics the feel and features of the Internet. Large organizations create intranets to provide their members with Internet and World Wide Web features, such as e-mail and Web pages. By sealing the intranet off from the larger Internet, however, a company can protect the information on the intranet from unwanted and possibly criminal intrusion. As security issues have arisen on the Internet, intranets have gained in popularity, particularly among businesses.
In addition to offering enhanced security, intranets provide control over traffic and access. Furthermore, intranets incorporate features found on websites, enabling users to easily find and share information, sound, and videos. Some intranets include such features as blogging (online publishing) and social networks (virtual communities) for employees.
