Plug-in software includes a variety of computer programs that add capabilities to existing programs that a person uses. Plug-in software programs are not designed to work on their own. Many types of plug-in software work with programs called web browsers. A web browser is a computer program used to access and display websites on the internet. Plug-ins might enable such a browser to display certain kinds of videos or to run certain games. Other popular plug-ins automatically block ads or translate text on web pages. The programming executed by a plug-in is sometimes called an applet.
Software developers may offer plug-ins for programs other than web browsers. For example, a plug-in may offer new features for a photo or video editing program. Software components called extensions work similarly to plug-ins.
