Supercomputer

Supercomputer is the fastest type of computer. Supercomputers work on the same principles as other computers, but their advanced design enables them to process information much more quickly. Because of their design and their speed, supercomputers require sophisticated cooling systems not needed on other computers.

Scientists use supercomputers to simulate (create a representation of) events that would be difficult or impossible to observe otherwise. For example, a geologist might use a supercomputer to simulate the movement of the earth’s crust. Mathematicians use supercomputers for advanced calculations.

Some supercomputers employ parallel processing. These supercomputers contain dozens or even hundreds of microprocessors (tiny electronic logic devices) that operate at the same time. Each microprocessor works on a separate piece of a problem. Dividing the problem up and solving the different parts at the same time results in high processing speeds.
