Von Bekesy, << von BAY keh shee, >> Georg (1899-1972), an American physicist, won the 1961 Nobel Prize in medicine for his research on the cochlea (the spiral canal of the inner ear). Von Bekesy was born in Budapest, Hungary. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Budapest in 1923.
