Bagehot, << BAJ uht, >> Walter (1826-1877), was an English banker and writer. He was an influential contributor to and editor of The Economist, a famous weekly publication. He wrote Lombard Street (1873), a description of the London money market of his time; The English Constitution (1867); and Economic Studies (published in 1880, after his death). His Physics and Politics (1869) applied the Darwinian principles of natural selection and inheritance to political and social development. He was born in Langport, Somerset, England.
