Bing, Sir Rudolf (1902-1988), served as manager of the Metropolitan Opera Association of New York City from 1950 to 1972. Before coming to the United States, he helped found the Edinburgh Festival in 1947. He worked as an opera and concert manager in Germany, England, and Scotland. Bing was born in Vienna, Austria. He began his career as director of the opera department of a Vienna concert agency. He became a British subject in 1946 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1971.
